On September 8, 2023, at approximately 0218 hours, the Colorado Springs Police Department received reports of an in progress theft at a convenience store in the 1900 block of N Academy Boulevard. The caller reported multiple suspects dressed in dark clothes and wearing masks on their faces entering the store and stealing undisclosed items. All suspects fled the area in a silver SUV.
At approximately 0342 hours, Officers were flagged down in the 300 block of Mount View Lane and a similar incident was reported to them. It was determined that the suspect information and vehicle description matched the earlier call on Academy Boulevard.
At approximately 0414 hours, a third incident was reported in the 900 block of North Circle Drive. On this incident, officers were able to obtain a vehicle description of a silver 2016 Hyundai Tucson with Colorado registration. A later investigation into the vehicle determined it to have been an unreported stolen car from the Falcon Division.
At approximately 0422 hours, a fourth incident was reported in the 5600 block of Palmer Park Boulevard with matching suspect descriptions.
At approximately 0440 hours, a fifth incident was reported in the 3800 block of North Nevada Avenue with matching suspect descriptions.
At approximately 0443 hours, a sixth incident was reported in the 200 block of West Fillmore Street with matching suspect descriptions.
At the time of this entry, the investigation is ongoing and the stolen vehicle has not been recovered. In all of the incidents, the suspects are described as 3-5 individuals wearing dark clothing and masks on their faces. In all cases, the individuals walk into the stores and steal various items from within, prior to fleeing in the silver Hyundai Tucson. Video surveillance is being reviewed from all locations to attempt to identify the suspects. No specific descriptions are available at this time.

On 09-06-23 the Colorado Springs PD Internet Crimes against Children unit was contacted by the Colorado Springs FBI office. The FBI provided information about a former church pastor and music teacher in Colorado Springs who was communicating with a couple in New Mexico who were exploiting children. On 09-07-23, the CSPD ICAC unit executed a search warrant in the 5200 block of Stirrup Point. 30-year-old Jonathan Shaheen was contacted and arrested on the charge of Sexual Exploitation of a Child.
The Colorado Springs Police Department is the lead agency for the Colorado Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force which is comprised of approximately 99 affiliate law enforcement agencies throughout the state. The Colorado ICAC Task Force investigates subjects who sexually exploit and lure Colorado’s most vulnerable victims. The Colorado Springs ICAC Task Force is comprised of detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, Special Agents with Homeland Security Investigations, and a Special Agent with the Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division.

Initial reports indicated that witnesses to the crash were attempting CPR on the driver of one of the vehicles. The investigation showed that three cars were stopped west bound on Platte at Powers when a fourth car approached from behind and struck the stopped vehicles. Speed and alcohol are not considered factors in this investigation currently.

On September 5, 2023, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Michael Dotson. At approximately 1:15 PM, Dotson was taken into custody without incident in the 3100 block of E. Dale Street by members of the Assault Unit, Armed Violent Offender Unit, TEU, and Canine. Dotson is currently being held at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center for the charges of Attempted First Degree Murder and First Degree Assault.

On 09/03/2023 at 2141 hrs officers from the Stetson Hills Division were dispatched to a shooting call for service in the 4800 block of Montebello Dr. The call taker was told that a male slashed the reporting party's tire before a shot was heard in the background. The suspect had sustained injuries from a struggle with the homeowner after forcing entry into the residence and assaulting the victim. No shots were actually fired.
